Read how senior Brynn used the to Launch at LPS in this Q&A.

Name: Brynn

Grade: 12

Home High School: East

Focus Program: Science Focus Program

Why did you choose the Science Focus Program?

I loved science in middle school. So, I was very excited to hear about an entire focus program about science. I heard about it through my friends who were also applying and thought it sounded great.

How did the Science Focus Program change your high school experience?

The community and Science Focus Program (SFP) classes are very different from a home high school. It's a really close community and we do many activities as a whole school, which I wouldn't get from any other high school. The teachers push you to do better and are always supportive of everyone.

What is the greatest lesson you learned from the Science Focus Program? Why?

SFP has taught me how to ask for help. Having access to teachers and classmates who are willing to help has made me a better advocate for myself. Because of the small community, I feel more comfortable asking questions.

How did the Science Focus Program help you reach your graduation goals?

I feel like the classes at SFP help me prepare for the independence and course load of college classes. There are many opportunities to take self-paced independent study classes, as well as AP and Dual Credit classes. The teachers encourage students to look outside the classroom into the subjects they are interested in.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I will be majoring in mechanical engineering at South Dakota School of Mines.

How did the Science Focus Program help prepare you for those post-graduation plans?

At SFP,  we do year-long research projects. You start learning the basics of the research process on day one of your freshman year and continue expanding your skills for four more years. I feel a lot more prepared for research and year-long projects in college because I have been working on these skills throughout high school.

How did the Science Focus Program help prepare you for the future?

Collaboration is important at SFP. We do many group projects and whole class activities. Working with my classmates and teachers has helped me prepare to collaborate with other engineers in college and after graduation.

What would your advice be to younger students considering joining your focus program? Why?

It's okay if you don't have everything figured out yet. If you know you love STEM but don't know what field, don't be worried. You will have so many people willing to help you figure out what you're passionate about.

What are you most thankful for about this experience? Why?

I'm thankful I got to know all the amazing people at SFP. I love the teachers and my classmates, and I'm glad we had such a great community to get to know each other for the last four years.

Congratulations, Brynn! We wish you the best in your future endeavors. We are thankful our educators could help you Launch at LPS!
